A protein electrophoresis is a test that measures specific proteins in the blood. It does this by separating the proteins in the blood sample based on their electrical charge. The test is often used to find abnormal substances called M proteins. The presense of M proteins can be a sign of a type of cancer called myeloma, or multiple myeloma. This test also measures for other proteins and antibodies (immunoglobulins).
Protein electrophoresis is often ordered when a person has symptoms that may be related to a medical condition, or as part of a routine health examination. It is used to help diagnose and monitor a variety of medical conditions and to assess the effectiveness of treatment. Protein electrophoresis may also be used to monitor the effectiveness of certain medications.
